Required Before You Dig

Pre-Excavation Scanning

GPR ground survey to locate all underground utilities and subsurface hazards before excavation begins. Required under WorkSafeBC regulation. Protecting BC workers since 1999.

A division of Anyleak.ca — BC's trusted subsurface specialists since 1999.

WorkSafeBC Regulation — Part 20

Employers must locate all buried utilities before any ground disturbance. Non-compliance can result in fines, project shutdown, and legal liability.

What Is Underground at Your Site?

Urban BC sites routinely have 4–8 separate utility types crossing any given excavation zone. Utility records are often incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate. Only GPR scanning gives you ground truth.

Natural Gas Lines

Extreme Risk

Explosion & Fire

Even a small nick can cause gas migration and delayed ignition. Fatalities have occurred from unmarked gas lines.

Electrical Cables

Extreme Risk

Electrocution

High-voltage cables buried as shallow as 300mm. Contact is potentially fatal with no warning.

Water Mains

High Risk

Flooding & Damage

Ruptured water mains cause immediate flooding, structural undermining, and costly service shutdowns.

Telecom & Fiber

Moderate Risk

Service Disruption

Damage to telecommunications infrastructure causes widespread service outages and significant financial penalties.

Excavation Types We Support

Foundation Excavation

Deep excavation for new building foundations, parkades, and basements.

  • Utility mapping to full excavation depth
  • Depth profiling for each utility
  • Safe setback recommendations
  • Shoring and dewatering considerations
Trenching Operations

Linear excavations for utilities, drainage, and underground infrastructure.

  • Crossing utility identification
  • Parallel utility mapping
  • Conflict resolution planning
  • Safe dig-in guidelines
Landscaping & Site Works

Shallow excavation for landscaping, irrigation, and surface improvements.

  • Shallow utility location (0–1m depth)
  • Irrigation and low-voltage detection
  • Tree root zone protection
  • Surface marking and flags
Emergency Repairs

Rapid utility location for urgent excavation related to service failures or damage.

  • Same-day response available
  • Critical area priority scanning
  • Rapid verbal and written reporting
  • On-site technician guidance

Our Scanning Process

1

Pre-Scan Review

We review available utility records, municipal drawings, and as-built documents to establish a baseline before field scanning.

2

Multi-Frequency GPR Survey

Our technicians perform a systematic grid scan across the proposed excavation zone using multiple antenna frequencies optimized for different utility types and depths.

3

Ground Marking

All detected utilities are marked on the surface with paint or flags using the standard color-coding system (APWA/ULCA) for immediate visual reference by site crews.

4

Documented Report

A formal pre-excavation report is issued within 24 hours, including a site plan with utility locations, depths, confidence levels, and safety recommendations for WorkSafeBC compliance.

What Your Report Includes

Site Plan & Drawings

  • Annotated site plan with all utility locations
  • Depth profiles for each detected utility
  • Confidence level rating per utility
  • Color-coded surface marking reference

Compliance Documentation

  • WorkSafeBC-compliant written report
  • Technician certification details
  • Equipment specifications and calibration
  • Recommendations for safe excavation
